John Rutherfurd papers, 1726-1835 (bulk 1775-1835).

Papers, 1775-1835, consisting principally of material relating to John Rutherfurd and his father, Walter Rutherfurd. The collection also contains small amounts of material concerning John Duncan, Alexander Hamilton, General John Reid, and Alexander McDonald, as well as material related to two institutions with which John Rutherfurd was affiliated, the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, and the Corporation for the Relief of Widows and Children of Clergymen of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It consists of business correspondence, legal papers, and accounts, mainly concerning the Rutherfurds' landholdings in New York and New Jersey. The legal papers include powers of attorney from British officers and other people living outside the United States, leases, and deeds. There are also some field notes and surveys of tracts in various counties in New Jersey. Subjects include legal disputes; sale and lease of lands; tenants and rent collection; sheep farming and wool (the collection includes some samples of wool); roads and bridges in New Jersey, including some drawings of a proposed bridge between New Jersey and Pennsylvania; and the estate of General John Reid. A group of letters from the Rev. John Frederick Ernst inquires about settling members of his congregation in the Chenango Tract. There are also some abstracts of legislation about the New Jersey - New York boundary, and a map of a turnpike route through New Jersey.
